Derby Climbing Wall Discount

Postby Tom on Sat May 17, 2008 4:07 pm

The new wall in Derby is now open and directions and details can be found at http://www.alter-rock.co.uk. I have no idea what its like but if nothing else its a change of scenery from the notts wall - a lot closer than sheffield

The manager has agreed to give us a discount to the wall on 2 days of the week (hopefully we can improve on this!) making admission £5.50 rather than £7.00. Ill post at the beginning of next week and let you know which days of the week discount will be available

Nice one on the discount. Hope the wall is better than their website - lol.

Derby Climbing Wall Discount

Postby johnB on Sun May 18, 2008 4:15 pm

Here's a report from a grad-entry med student (they live in derby).

"About 14 pannels bouldering if memory serves, and a few more pannels than that for lead climbing. The holds are all bolt ons, no moulded walls unfortunately, and the grading is a bit unpredictable."

Goes on to say there are around 30 boulder problems up. Sounds like it is worth a visit.

Finally made it the wall and its definatly worth a visit for both routes and bouldering. The lead routes are so much better than the crap at Notttingham wall (sorry!). Our discount isnt yet effective but it should be up and running in the next few days. Ill post up from when I hear back from them.

I second what tom says, only I enjoy the bouldering more as well, its reminiscent of the works.

If you are vaguely associated with the NHS (e.g. medical students) then you should manage to get the discount I got today (wed). £5.50, bargain!

Nice to find we get a discount, this is the closest wall to home in the holidays so might try to get up there a bit more :)

Only been a couple of times, but thought it was quite good despite its lack of height like Nottingham. The routes are actually worth doing.

Good effort grizzing it out at Rivelin yesterday, I was half expecting you to turn up at the Foundry. Was it not grim?

It was indeed grim. Everything was green, wet and frictionless, so we just did some easy routes. By the end of the day I looked like I had been rolling around in a ditch. Good to get outdoors though.

I think the main lead wall is probably longer than the walls at nottingham, it definately feels more sustained. Theres some mad 6c on the end set by steve mclure, which has a crux right at the top and a near impossible clip meaning you have to run it out to the lower off. Pretty exciting for indoors

I quite like the lead routes on the end wall at Derby, they certainly feel sustained for my weak arms! Not so taken with the bouldering, I find the grading a bit random.
