Summer Roadtrip?

Postby Zappa on Mon May 03, 2010 12:49 pm

hey everybody! while sitting with revision in front of me and staring outside at the miserable weather, naturally i've been daydreaming about sunny days and climbing, and thinking about how boring it is that we have no trips in the summer after cornwall.

my proposed solution to this is simple: during mid to late august when the weather will be sunniest, spending a week or so doing a roadtrip from perhaps pembroke or north wales and heading down to portland or swanage, stopping in places like cheddar gorge, some dartmoor crags, torquay DWS etc. en route with the intentions of getting in some trad, sport and DWS over the week. (along with some rest days at the beach with vast quantities of beer of corse!)

i'm proposing this as an unofficial club trip with everyone sorting between themselves how to get to the starting point, then travelling together for the week. i'm happy to take care of organising where we camp and working out a rough itinery of where we'll be over the week so if poeple want to meet us for a day or 2 they can find us etc. my thoughts are that 10 days would be ideal as we could overlap over 2 weekends so boring people who cant get off work could try and join us for the weekends.

this is only a very rough plan in the works so if your interested in coming along post up any ideas/input you may have and we'll see if we can make this happen!

I'd be interested in joining you for weekends as a boring person who has to work if you do it before mid-July. :D
Otherwise I'll be in Pakistan i'm afraid. Oh and I'll have a car and would be coming from the London area.

Mate that sounds sweet! All my summer plans nicely condensed into a 10 day epic adventure. I'm in even if I have to quit my job to get the time off! If it's in August Soph's tendons should be better by then too. I def want to go to north Wales and Pembroke.

I can pretty much guarantee that a car from Notts will come join you at the weekends as long as the weather is good. Based upon last summer Im sure wil and sam will be up for it as well. We did the august bank holiday in pembroke last year and it was probably one of the best trips of the year. Gorgeous weather, amazing climbing and jonny dawes on one rollerblade :D

Torquay would be good as well, Im desperate to go here (Anstey's cove). The photo is om one of my teachers at school!

I'd really like to head down to try Empire of the Sun. I doubt I'd take a week off, but I might take a day or two to get a long weekend.

definitely.

i bet we'd find it hard to leave a place after spending only a day in it though!

somewhere in late august my retakes will be housed. so ill have to fit around them.

i have a car, will be coming from nottingham or somerset. i was gonna say if we do cheddar everyone can stay at mine but climbing's prohibited from 1st july - 6th september.

bummer forgot about cheddar restrictions, some of the routes there look awesome.

might be a good idea to plan the trip starting on the bank holiday weekend this year too (last weekend of august) to get an extra day in for the weekenders, and one less day for everyone else to take off.

Cheddar might be out but Shorn Cliff would provide a few good days at the grades most people are climbing. There's a campsite a mile away.

You wanna get yourselves to Shorncliff and Wintour's Leap. HVS Central. There's a cool campsite with a view of the whole valley.

How about incorporating a day trip paddling the Wye? No experience necessary, just hire the paddles. they pick you up at the end of the day too. My friend works at Monmouth Canoe Centre so we could sort something out. Pirates ahoy!

The Gower is gorgeous for a couple of days with nice campsites, good beaches and some surf.

I'll join you guys for a weekend or two provided I am still around. India is beckoning me....!!

I'm in :) I'm assuming it's ok to throw this open to mates from back home? They're nice and I promise they'll behave. Also one has a car which would be helpful for me.

bump! its time to start organising this so if people could let me know if they're up for coming for either for the bank holiday weekend in pembroke/the whole week's roadtrip that would be awesome!
