Conville course 2010

Postby peterbayliss on Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:11 pm

Applications for the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust Alpine Mountaineering courses are now open, further details here.
I did the course a few years ago; I had a great time and learnt a lot. Other UNUMC and MPS members have also done the course in the past. The course helps provide a sound basis for mountaineering in the Alps, and is heavily subsidised only costing £70 for 3 days.

I would apply early and answer the questions carefully as places are limited, if you need any help with this feel free to ask.

I would also love to go. I got most of the way through filling in the form then realised that I can't actually commit to any dates until I know where I am working from August, by which time the courses will all be full :(
I was thinking of getting some people together to go to Chamonix and hire a guide to teach us stuff.... All very theoretical at the moment given that I won't know what dates I am free for another 2 weeks or so. <sigh>

Indeed, I would probably die of a heart attack trying to keep up with Chris! Wouldn't be quite as painful as trying to keep up with Hamish though.

The deadline for conville is not far off - 17th April - so nows the the time to apply if you might be interested. As well as the skills side, its also a good opportunity to meet like minded people and I would definitely recommend it.

I don't understand either of these comments.

Annette you should just apply anyway and take a chance with dates - the conville people won't commit to the last minute and it's unlkely you'll get your first choice anyway. And it doesn't cost you anything to fill in the form so it's silly not to.

Chris- you ran up 16 Munros in one day on an MPS trip. You ascend mountains very quickly, hence I would die. Just seconding Hamish up a route on Gritstone (or at Swanage for that matter) is bloody exhausting, as he climbs thuggy routes that require immense physical strength and impeccable technique. Hence, I would also die climbing with Hamish, and it would probably hurt even more.

Take it as a compliment Chris, on both accounts, as it is intended as such :)

I will fill in the form tomorrow morning- as a way of avoiding last minute cramming before my penultimate exam (11.15 tomorrow).

And how else are you going to get those things?

I've never done a Conville course, but know plenty who recommend it. I did a Plas-Y-Brenin course several years ago which was along the same lines but longer, it was worth every penny.

With moderate physical strength, questionable technique and a lot of dark chocolate hobnobs.

I don't actually have either of those things! To climb better you just need to be determined and have plenty of psyche...start going to the wall lots (make the most of these sessions by warming up, beating yourself up and then warming down), stop drinking beer (i really need to do this one), eat less cake and for alpine stuff apply for the conville course!

You're going to gain immense physical strength and impeccable technique by using moderate physical strength and questionable technique plus sugar? Sounds like homeopathy to me...
